Key takeaways
- Every craving passes. The CDC says a craving "will always pass", and smokefree.gov says cravings fade the longer you stay quit. None of the sources we checked gives an exact number of minutes.
- Cravings fade the longer you stay quit, and withdrawal overall lasts 3 to 4 weeks on average for people quitting smoking, longer for some (NHS).
- Change what you're doing the moment it hits. Move, breathe slowly 10 times, or keep your mouth busy (smokefree.gov).
- Know your triggers. Stress, other people vaping, alcohol and daily routines are the common ones (smokefree.gov).
How long does one nicotine craving last?
None of the health sources we checked puts an exact number on it. The CDC says you never have to give in to a craving and that "it will always pass". Smokefree.gov calls vape cravings "common, but also temporary". The National Cancer Institute says cravings can start "within an hour or two" after your last use and may come often for the next few days or weeks, and that as time passes, "the cravings will get farther apart".
One person who quit puts it in minutes. An EX Program member quoted by Truth Initiative says: "Cravings only last a few minutes and become farther and farther apart with time." Truth Initiative itself says cravings "will pass eventually", and that deliberately distracting yourself helps.
That is the whole strategy. You don't have to beat cravings forever, only this one, until it passes.
When do nicotine cravings stop for good?
There's no fixed date, but they fade with time. Smokefree.gov says cravings to vape "will fade the longer you stay quit". The NHS says cravings and bad feelings will go away, and "each day will feel a little easier".
| Stage | What sources say |
|---|---|
| First hour or two | Cravings can start, and may come often for the next few days or weeks (National Cancer Institute). |
| First week | Withdrawal is usually strongest, especially in the first 3 days (NHS, for people quitting smoking). |
| A few days to a couple of weeks | The worst withdrawal symptoms usually end (smokefree.gov). |
| 3 to 4 weeks | The average length of withdrawal symptoms. Some people feel them for longer, sometimes for a few months (NHS). |
| After that | Withdrawal symptoms fade as long as you stay quit (CDC). Plan for triggers such as alcohol and stress, which smokefree.gov lists among the common ones. |
The NHS, CDC and National Cancer Institute figures are for quitting smoking or tobacco. The CDC says quitting vaping is likely similar to quitting smoking. The full picture is in our withdrawal timeline, the other symptoms in side effects of quitting vaping, and the whole quit in how long it takes to quit vaping.
Why do cravings hit?
Two reasons, according to smokefree.gov: withdrawal from nicotine itself, and triggers, meaning the people, places and situations you link with vaping or smoking.
The withdrawal part starts in your brain. Smokefree.gov says that when you vape, "your brain and body get used to having nicotine", and when you quit they must get used to not having it. The CDC adds that even a thought or a feeling can trigger a craving, and the National Cancer Institute separates the physical craving from a psychological one, set off when you see people smoking or are around other triggers. Knowing your triggers lets you plan for them instead of being ambushed.
How do you stop a nicotine craving?
To stop a nicotine craving, pick one of these and start it the moment the craving hits. Each step comes from smokefree.gov.
- Switch things up. Stop what you're doing and do something different. Changing your routine can help you get over a craving.
- Get moving. A quick walk, or up and down the stairs a few times. Even short bursts of activity help.
- Breathe slowly. In through your nose, out through your mouth, 10 times, until the craving passes. Use the pacer below.
- Keep your mouth busy. Gum, hard candy, crunchy snacks or a glass of water. Smokefree.gov also passes on a tip from quitters: breathe through a straw.
- Text or call someone. Connecting with people can help you stay strong.
- Play a game on your phone or do something helpful for someone else, to take the focus off yourself.
- Count your savings. Think about what you'll spend the money on while the craving passes.
- Call an expert. In the US, 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669) or 1-877-44U-QUIT connects you to free quit support.
Breathe through it: 10 slow breaths
Follow the circle. Breathe in while it grows, out while it shrinks. Nothing is recorded.

Which triggers set off vape cravings?
Smokefree.gov sorts them into four kinds:
- Social: seeing or smelling someone vape, being offered a vape, drinking alcohol or going to a bar, seeing vapes on social media, celebrations.
- Everyday: being on your phone, waiting for a ride, coffee, breaks at work, TV or video games, walking or driving.
- Emotional: feeling stressed, anxious, lonely, bored, angry, sad or frustrated, and also happy, excited or relieved.
- Withdrawal: feeling irritable or restless, strong cravings, trouble concentrating, waking up wanting to vape.

Smokefree.gov's advice for triggers: throw away vapes, chargers and pods, change your routes and routines, plan what you'll do with downtime, and practise a simple "No, thanks. I quit." for when someone offers you one.
Does nicotine gum stop cravings?
It can help. Smokefree.gov says that even on nicotine replacement you may get a hard craving, and suggests a short-acting product such as a lozenge or gum, plus a long-acting one such as the patch, to get past it. One caveat for people who vape: smokefree.gov notes that the Food and Drug Administration has not approved NRT or other quit-smoking medicines to help people quit vaping, and says to talk with a doctor or health care professional about whether medication is right for you. We don't give dosing advice.
What if I give in to a craving?
Smokefree.gov's answer: don't think of a slip as a failure, think of it as a temporary setback. You're "not back to square one". Work out why it happened and plan what you'll do next time you're in that situation. The NHS also warns that even one cigarette can pull you back into the cycle of cravings, so the plan matters.
Frequently asked questions
Are vape cravings different from cigarette cravings?
Both come from nicotine. The CDC says quitting vaping is likely similar to quitting smoking because both involve nicotine addiction, and smokefree.gov gives very similar craving strategies for both.
Does drinking water help with cravings?
Smokefree.gov says drinking water may help reduce cravings, and suggests keeping your mouth busy with gum, hard candy or water.
Where can I get free help during a craving?
In the US, call 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669) or the National Cancer Institute quitline at 1-877-44U-QUIT, chat with the National Cancer Institute's LiveHelp, or text QUIT to 47848 for SmokefreeTXT. In the UK, NHS Better Health has advice on quitting.
Will one puff undo my progress?
Smokefree.gov says a slip is a temporary setback, not a failure, and that you are not back to square one. The NHS warns that even one cigarette can pull you back into the cycle of cravings, so plan for the moment that caused it.
Does counting help?
It shows you your real number. In our analysis of app reviews, 10 of 45 five-star reviews of one puff-counting app credited seeing how much they vaped. The free puff counter works in your browser, and the taper planner turns your number into a day-by-day limit if you'd rather cut down first. In trials of people who smoked, that worked about as well as quitting at once (see the evidence).
